Upside-down catfish are small, reaching a maximum of 4 inches. They have large eyes, a large dorsal fin and three pair of barbels. It’s a skittish fish that prefers to school with others. These fish spend almost all of their adult life upside-down. Because of this they have adapted a pigmentation that is the reverse of most other fish. Their bellies are darker than their backs, a form of counter shading. These fish have lighter colors on the top of their bodies and darker colors below used for camouflage. The lighter color on the top make it harder for predators to see the fish when looking up toward the sky but only when the fish are swimming upside-down. They are an active and playful fish and unlike a lot of other catfish they don’t hide in aquariums as much. They tend to continuously move around in the tank, exploring their surroundings.
