Geophagus Heckelii (Acarichthys heckelii) , is a peaceful, colorful, easy to care for geophagus, more related to Acaras than to Geophagus. It has a small mouth for its size. This fish grows to 8-9 inch, and develops long filaments on its dorsal fin, those filaments can expend 2 to 3 inch. This fish does not sift and forage through the substrate like a Geophagus. The males have a brighter coloration and get a little larger than the female. These are captive bred and will accept a variety of foods
This fish will do well in some planted aquarium. It is not known to be a predator, but will eat small fish if the opportunity arises. We recommend keeping this fish in larger aquariums, 30 gallon and up. Does well with angelfish, plecos, catfish, larger tetras and some peaceful cichlids.
